Students will need to know basic characteristics of synthetic (man-made) and natural fibers. They will also need to know that a blend is a combination of two or more fibers.
Curriculum Standards: 9.0 Analyze how knowledge and skills related to textiles and apparel affect the well-being of individuals.
9.0.1 Analyze factors affecting textile and apparel decisions for individuals.
9.0.2 Evaluate textile information and services 9.0.3
9.0.4 Evaluate the impact of science and technology on apparel and textiles.
*Students will learn to assess and prioritize fiber characteristics and possibily create a blend to arrive at a suitable fabric.
*Students will need to keep in mind the requirements of a spacesuit----heat resistant, insulated, good wicking, drapeable, comfortable, non-flammable and tough enough to withstand rough wear.
The thinking skills will involve critical evaluation of what characteristics are necessary to preserve life, protect, and comfort the person. Also what will allow satisfactory movement to conduct experiements and navigate in and out of a space ship.
This project is planned for a five day time period. You'll be assigned to a team of three and will be given the problem You will need to use the sites listed in order to begin the research.
The second day, your team will research the fibers, jotting down notes on each fiber that they think meets the criteria.
The third day, your team meets as a group and discusses which fibers or blends of fibers might be the best option and why your team choose that fiber/s.
Fourth day, your team will design the space suit, making it easy to put on and take off, and also to use the restroom. They can get pretty artistic with this as it would be great if it's aesthetic as well.
Fifth day, each group will present what research they found, the fiber/s they selected, and the design of the spacesuit to the NASA Committee.
