Introduction

A number of great civilizations flourished in Mexico long before the arrival of Spanish conquistadores in the early 16th century. The Olmec civilization was one of the earliest of these, reaching its high point between 800 and 400 B.C. The Mayas civilization flourished between about A.D. 300 and 900, followed by the Toltecs (900ˆ1200) and the Aztecs (1200ˆ1519). The Aztecs were defeated by the Spanish in 1521 and this began Spanish rule for 300 years.
