The Process for "Rags to Riches"

1. From a list that has been created, you need to choose one person you would like to research. Don't be afraid to choose someone you don't know about, it makes the research much more interesting. Click here for the List.

2. Once you have selected the topic and your teacher has approved that topic, you need to go to your textbook, encyclopedia, and/or web site to find the information about your topic. Click here for Resources.

3. In your research you should include their name, where they are from, where they lived, information regarding their family, when they were born and when they died. (sounds pretty much like a report, huh)

4. But, here's the kicker. After you have found the biographical information, you need to determine what they contributed to the Industrial Age. You may not read anything in a book or encyclopedia on this idea. You may have to analyze this idea and write it based on what you think they contributed to the Industrial Age.

5. Also, tell something significant about your person. This could be anything that people may not know. What made them so important? Did they do something extraordinary?

6. Once you have gathered information about your person, write an informative paper about your topic. In your paper include all the information you have found.

7. From your paper, you now know plenty of information about your person. Now you get to introduce your person to the class. You need to become that person. Each of you will dress the part of your character.

8. You will need to give a speech that talks about your life and accomplishments. In this speech, you are the person. You will give the speech as the person you have chosen to write about.

9. You may use visual aids to help in your speech. Props may also be used. For example, maybe you have a model T that could be used to show the audience how a Ford looked in appearance or a poster of the machine and how it worked.

10. Be creative and give others an opportunity to get to know your character. If you are an inventor, tell people which invention you think is the most important. Maybe you could tell them why you invented it or what life would be like without your invention.
